If you’re attending university, chances are high that you’re here to succeed and graduate. So, want to know the first indicator for student success at university? Attending orientation.

Studies show that students who take part in new student orientation do better in their classes, tend to graduate sooner and are less likely to fall into an academic probation.

Okay, so now you know why you should show up for orientation—the reason you want to go is because it’s just fun!

On September 8, 2015, New Student Orientation starts bright and early with check-in from 8:30-9:55 a.m. in the short-term parking lot beside the Sportsplex. The festivities proper begin at 10 a.m., when all 1,700 new students will gather to open the new year with an academic procession (think maces and regalia), take part in theatre sports and hear from your Registrar’s office, Capilano Student Union, and the Centre for International Experience (CIE).

After that, it’s time to meet your fellow program mates and instructors in school-specific breakout sessions.

At noon, you’ll have a chance to solve a campus-wide app-based scavenger hunt with a team of new friends. “Wild Goosechase” is just what it sounds like—a wild romp all over campus, following clues and completing objectives to be the first team to win.

Prizes will be awarded in three categories: Overall Winner, Most Enthusiastic Group and Most Creative group, with a chance to win fantastic prizes. Prize for the Overall winning group is $150 pre-paid Visa card for each team member!

After that, join in with CUSP, where new and returning students turn the campus into a street party with Vancouver food trucks, booths, games and performances by Willa. (On-campus parking will be free on Orientation Day until 5:30 p.m.)

Booths at Orientation are informational, and many are also interactive. Come fish like a bear with Marketing and Communications or build with Lego and pick up a DIY Library tool kit in the Library foyer, for example. And, if that’s not enough, Whole Foods will be giving out samples of all kinds of delicious treats!

In addition to joining the university-wide orientation and street party on September 8, international students attending Cap U for the first time are invited to join in the (mandatory) new international student orientation on September 3, 2015, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Be sure to sign up if you haven’t already done so!

Come learn valuable information that will help you transition into your life in Vancouver and succeed in your studies at Capilano U. You will hear from some inspiring speakers, learn your way around campus, get your student ID and most importantly have a chance to meet new friends and staff who are here to support you during your studies at Cap U.

You will also have the opportunity to win some great prizes, have fun and enjoy our special welcome lunch. Remember to bring your study permits, your MSP card (if you have one), any outstanding official documents and your smiles. Look forward to seeing you there!
