Justin Nichols poses with his Emmy award (submitted by Justin Nichols).
It was just another normal work day for storyboard artist and CapU animation grad Justin Nichols when he found out he had won an Emmy Award.
“I was by myself in my cubicle when I got a call from the Television Academy,” Nichols says.
Nichols, who works at Disney TVA, was awarded the Emmy for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation for his work in Wander Over Yonder, a series that aired on Disney XD. He immediately called his family and his boyfriend to tell the news.
“I was sincerely shocked,” Nichols says. “I actually didn’t have time to celebrate on my own because I was still in a race against the clock to meet a deadline at work.”
Nichols credits CapU instructor Don Perro, who first created CapU’s 2D animation program curriculum, for preparing him to succeed in an intense work environment.
“Having worked in the industry himself, Don knew what would serve as the best foundation to launch us into our careers,” Nichols says. “It was fantastic. I’ve never enjoyed school so much.”
The series finale of Wander Over Yonder aired in 2016. Nichols will continue to work with the show’s creator and director Craig McCracken, whose credits include The Powerpuff Girls and Dexter’s Laboratory.
